Hurricane Preparedness

When a hurricane hits, it’s easy to feel like there’s absolutely nothing you can do. WIth high-speed winds and floods to think about, it’s not hard to get overwhelmed by the sheer amount of disaster that prior hurricanes have caused. However, it’s important to remain calm and prepare as much as you can; this way, you can minimize the damage to your property and avoid panicking during the storm.

It’s also worth noting that homes in Florida are built to withstand hurricanes. When hurricanes blow through, the news is always filled with dismal stories about the damage. However, the damage in Florida is often minimal; the cities are meant to withstand wind, rain, and hail. Knowing this, there’s little reason to worry after you take the steps you need to prepare for the storm.

But before we give you our tips to hurricane preparedness, think about what’s a priority for your home. For instance, homes with hurricane-proof glass may not necessarily require the installation of metal shutters for less severe hurricanes. Likewise, homes with pets should consider having extra preparations set so that your pet can stay inside during the storm.

Gather up basic emergency supplies.

A quick Google search will bring up lists upon lists of recommended supplies. For those who are unfamiliar with storms, it might be a good idea to browse through a few of these lists and figure out what works best for your family. However, there are essentials that every home should have: extra batteries, flashlights or candles, basic bandages, and much more. Look through a list and figure out what’s right for your family.

Have an evacuation plan.

In the event that your home floods or otherwise becomes unsafe, have a safe location you can access in an emergency. This might be your nearest storm shelter or a relative’s house, but keep in mind that driving may not be safe during a hurricane. Make sure your evacuation spot is nearby and have a plan to meet there in the event that the storm separates your family. It never hurts to be too careful, so ensure that all children and other family members know what to do in case of an emergency like this.

Be aware of storm hazards.

Those who haven’t experienced a hurricane before may not be savvy with all the extra information involved. For instance, keep in mind that the eye of the storm is the calmest part. When it passes over your home, it may seem as though the storm is over. However, hours later the storm may kick up again. Another example is the fact that powerlines may be knocked down during the storm, and while this also means no electricity it will also mean that any puddles outside may be electrified. Small children and pets should be kept inside throughout the storm and recovery process.

Hurricane Preparedness

Keep in mind that the recovery process is gradual and it may take a long time to regain your bearings. Be patient, calm, and follow these hurricane tips. Whether it’s your first hurricane or your hundredth, it’s best to be prepared in any storm situation.
